A veil of shame on her head, Karamoja affairs minister Mary Goretti Kitutu Kimono walked from her vehicle into the Anti-Corruption Court based in Kololo in the Ugandan capital Kampala.
Kitutu, who formerly served as minister of energy and mineral development, fell in trouble over the alleged diversion of about 9,000 iron sheets between June 2022 and January 2023. The iron sheets were part of a Karamoja sub region empowerment program.
As she disembarked out of her vehicle at the Anti-Corruption Court, Minister Kitutu was pictured in a veil in a bid to hide her identity from a number of photojournalists that had positioned themselves to take shots of her walk of shame.
But the photojournalists managed to take photos in which her face could be identified. Even as she hurried away into the court building where she waited to be arraigned Thursday, April 06 afternoon, reporters recorded videos and took more photos of her.
Once in the dock, she pulled off her veil but kept her mask on.
Meanwhile, Kitutu pleaded not guilty to the charges read to her. On April 05, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) sanctioned charges of corruption and conspiracy to commit a felony against Kitutu for diverting iron sheets meant for the Karamoja Community Empowerment Programme.
By publication time, Kitutu had applied for bail. Details follow…
As Minister Kitutu was in court, calls for the arrest of Vice President Jessica Alupo, Speaker Anita Among, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja and a number of ministers named in the Karamoja iron sheets scandal were growing. (See details Here).
