Buganda Kingdom’s BBS TV (Terefayina) says its ‘kidnapped’ employee, Senior Journalist Kenneth Kavulu, is under police detention.
Kavulu, the presenter of the Omugotekko show, was ‘abducted’ recently and bundled into a vehicle outside Masengere.
The senior journalist was leaving work by the time the men who were said to be armed ‘abducted’ him and shoved him into a waiting Mark II car.
Although BBS TV and Kavulu’s colleagues had said that most of the security agencies had denied ‘kidnapping’ and detaining the senior journalist, the Buganda Kingdom-owned television station later said that police had confirmed holding Kavulu.
“Following the announcement of the abduction of our staff member and colleague, Kavulu Kenneth, , by unknown people this morning, Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) spokesperson Patrick Onyango has said that KMP are holding and that he is helping them with investigations over some issues,” BBS TV tweeted at about 8pm on Friday, September 16.
The station’s original Luganda station read: “Oluvannyuma lw’okutegeeza enkya ya leero nga mukozi munnaffe Kavulu Kenneth bweyawambiddwa abantu abatanategerekeka, Omwogezi wa Poliisi mu Kampala n’emirilaano, Patrick Onyango ategeezezza nti beebamulina nga waliwo ensonga zebali mukunoonyerezaako.”
It was not clear why Kavulu was being detained instead of police inviting him for interrogation for a few hours. BBS TV did not reveal the reason Onyango gave for the manner in which their employee was arrested.
Police are yet to issue a formal statement on Kavulu’s detention and charges instituted against him.
