‘Best Statistician Spends Shs347bn on Census, Asks Ugandans 180 Questions – then Makes Them Guess Figures!’ Uganda’s Biggest Tribes Revealed – See How Many People Each Tribe Has 2024 CENSUS RESULTS: See Number of People Per Sub Region of Uganda in 2024

UBOS ED Dr Chris Mukiza

Following the dissemination of the final results from the National population and housing Census 2024, Uganda’s biggest tribes have been revealed. Uganda’s most populous tribes have over – or nearly – a million people.

The Constitution of Uganda recognizes 65 indigenous communities or tribes. But of these, only 13 have a population of at least one million people each.

Uganda’s population stands at 45.9 million people in 2024 – although President Yoweri Museveni was shocked by the number, which he believed should have been bigger than that according to earlier projections. (We reported that HERE).

In this report, The Pearl Times now presents Uganda’s biggest tribes in 2024 and how their populations changed in the past one decade, according to figures from the National population and housing Census 2024.

Uganda’s biggest tribe is Baganda. The number of Baganda increased from 5,555,412 in the last census conducted in 2014 to 7,037,404 people in 2024.

Baganda are followed by Banyankore as the second biggest tribe in Uganda. The number of Ugandans who identify as Banyankore increased from 3,217,015 in 2014 to 4,200,782 this year.

Following Baganda and Banyankore on the list of  Uganda’s biggest tribes in 2024 are the Basoga. The population of the Basoga increased from 2,960,983 to 3,703,535 in 10 years.

The Basoga are followed by the Iteso on the list of Uganda’s most populous tribes in 2024. In the past decade, the population of the Iteso increased from 2,365,107 to 3,146,079 people.

The Bakiga are the fifth most populous tribe of Uganda, with their population increasing from 2,390,975 people in 2014 to 2,947,837 in 2024.

The Langi tribe is in the sixth position on the list of Uganda’s biggest tribes in 2024. Their population increased from 2,131,443 in 2014 to 2,703,277 in 2024.

In number seven are the Bagisu standing at 2,096,149 people in 2024, with their number having increased from 1,647,382 in 2014 .

In number eight on the list of Uganda’s most populous tribes are the Acholi at 1,941,913 in 2024, with their number having increased from 1,470,884 in 2014.

In the ninth position on the list of Uganda’s biggest tribes are the Lugbara whos population rose from 1,099,879 to 1,230,384 people in 10 years.

In the 10th position on the list of Uganda’s most populous tribes are the Banyoro whose population increased from 878,529 to 1,218,121 in one decade.

The Banyoro are followed by the Alur whose population increased from 850,828 in 2014 to 1,152,858 in 2024.

They are followed by the Batoro whose population increased from 810,742 to 1,005,433 in 10 years.

They are followed by the Bafumbira whose number increased from 713,009 to 949,860 in a decade. The rest of the tribes combined saw their population rise from 6,572,351 in 2014 to 8,934,046 in 2024.
