Uganda Launches Own Social Media Platform ‘MyLYK’ as Museveni Ban on Facebook Continues

Uganda’s innovators have today unveilled a new social media app dubbed ‘MyLYK’ as President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s ban of big tech platform Facebook remains in place.

Ahead of the January 2021 presidential and parliamentary election, government banned social media platforms and all internet access channels.

Weeks later, Museveni allowed Ugandans to access all social media platforms except platform.

Facebook had deleted accounts of officials at Uganda’s information ministry.

Now, app developers have launched MyLYK.

Launching the app at the tourism ministry offices in Kampala on October 22, MyLYK managing director Andrew Aja Baryayanga said his platform would help connect people and communities, past, present and future.

He added that MyLYK would market Uganda to the world.

“This App that we have introduced to the World today, has been carefully designed to suit our Lifestyle and is meant to be as interactive as possible,” said Baryayanga.

“It is a unique app to connect communities. It is interactive, easy and fun to use.”

With MyLYK app, users can share and invite their friends and family to connect on the app. The app also allows posting in communities, pages, marketplace, jobs, and blogs.

Users can share texts, images, videos, links, stickers, hashtags, real-time chats or make voice and videos calls.

MyLYK is already accessible on Google PlayStore on Android and Apple AppStore on the iPhone.
