Uganda Airlines CEO Jennifer Bamuturaki Sacked

Jenniifer Bamuturaki has been sacked as CEO of Uganda Airlines by President Museveni following investigations into mismanagement and financial losses.

In an email to staff, Bamuturaki encouraged colleagues to apply for her position, which will be advertised soon. The President is considering appointing a former Ethiopian Airlines chief executive to lead the national carrier.

Bamuturaki’s dismissal follows a State House meeting that reviewed governance failures, disputed aircraft procurement decisions, and growing financial losses. The CID had requested financial, procurement, and operational documents to aid ongoing investigations into the airline’s transactions.

The move signals a major leadership overhaul at Uganda Airlines, with Museveni keen on installing a new management team capable of steering the airline through internal challenges and positioning it for long-term sustainability. Bamuturaki’s exit had been hinted at in her internal email, suggesting transition arrangements are underway.

Allegations of mismanagement

Bamuturaki’s tenure was marred by controversy, with former board chairman Perez Godfrey Ahabwe accusing her of incompetence, insubordination, and financial impropriety. Ahabwe claimed Museveni wrongly appointed Bamuturaki, citing her poor performance as commercial director.

Investigations revealed inflated contracts, including a USD 404,000 media promotional services deal with Abbaverta Media Agency, where Bamuturaki allegedly had a conflict of interest. The airline also faced scrutiny over procurement irregularities, including substandard staff uniforms and overpriced food.

Impact on Uganda Airlines

The airline has struggled financially, prompting Museveni to order investigations into its operations. The appointment of a new CEO aims to stabilize the airline’s leadership and chart a clearer path forward. The position will be advertised soon, and qualified internal candidates are encouraged to apply.
