Ugandan tycoon James Garuga Musinguzi is dead. He was the director of Kigezi Highland Tea, among other multi-billion ventures.
The Grain Council of Uganda (TGCU), where Musinguzi was a member, confirmed his death.
“With great sadness, we announce the passing of our member, Mr. James Musinguzi-Garuga, proprietor of Kamwenge Community Development Company Ltd. A great loss to our membership. We condole with the family,” TGCU announced.
Garuga Musinguzi was a respected politician and financier of political activities. He is remembered for his role in Dr Kizza Besigye’s political career.
In 2001 and 2006, James Garuga Musinguzi shook Kinkizi West when he ran against then defence minister (later prime minister) John Patrick Amama Mbabazi.
Museveni would later step in to reconcile Garuga and Mbabazi.
Born in 1953 in Kihihi village in Kanungu District, James Garuga Musinguzi attended Kinkizi Primary School, Mbarara High School and Makerere College School.
He would proceed to Makerere University, pursuing a bachelor of commerce degree. He also attained a bachelor of laws degree years later.
He also played a pivotal role in Museveni’s National Resistance Army (NRA) bushwar that brought the current government into power.
Yet Garuga Musinguzi was part of the group that formed Reform Agenda, which culminated in the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).
James Garuga Musinguzi worked with Rayon Textiles Limited and Shell as an accountant.
He also worked with Inafex Services Limited and ran Garuga Country Club Entebbe. He was the director of Kinkiizi Development Company which ran Bwindi Tea Factory. He was also associated with Bushenyi-based Valley University of Science and Technology.
James Garuga Musinguzi was married to Peace Musinguzi.
