Rt Rev Msgr Expedito Magembe, the founding director of Mount Sion Prayer Centre in Bukalango, has died at the age of 88, the Archdiocese of Kampala has confirmed.
On behalf of His Grace Paul Ssemogerere, Archbishop of Kampala, Rev Fr Pius Male Ssentumbwe, the Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Kampala announced Msgr Expedito Magembe’s death.

“With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of Monsignor Expedito Magembe of Mount Sion Bukalango. He has departed from this life on May 9, 2025,” Rev Fr Ssentumbe said in a statement addressed to all priests, and the faithful.
“Burial arrangements will be communicated in due course. We kindly request for your prayers for the repose of his soul.”
Ssentumbwe did not reveal the cause of death for Monsignor Expedito Magembe. It is understood that Msgr Magembe had been ill for some time, with some on social media even falsely claiming he was dead in February 2025.
He will be remembered for his masses with his Sangaalo prayer sessions in which he exorcised evil powers from people. Some even labelled him the chief exorcist of the Archdiocese of Kampala.
Wearing his big rosary and faith, Monsignor Expedito Magembe was a man on a mission to woo Catholics who had joined Pentecostal churches.
And when they joined other members of the Catholic flock at Mount Sion Prayer Centre in Bukalango, the power of God that worked through Msgr Magembe made them behold and experience deliverance, exorcism, impactful preaching and powerful worship.
A liturgical musician Monsignor Expedito Magembe had composed almost 1,000 hymns and songs. A number of these can be found in in the official Luganda Catholic hymn book MTO (Mujje Tumutendereze).
Some musical prowess and anointing put him in the class of revered liturgical musicians like Fr James Kabuye and Fr Joseph Namukangula.
Magembe was awarded the Cherubim Musical Honour in February 2024.
I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to His Grace Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere, the community of the Kampala Archdiocese, and to the family, friends, and parishioners of Msgr. Expedito Magembe, the founder and director of Mt. Zion Prayer Centre in Bukalango, upon his passing.
Msgr. Magembe undoubtedly won many souls for Christ and created a welcoming space where countless individuals came to seek God, pray, and receive guidance. May his legacy, which spanned 50 years of priesthood, inspire many to be God-fearing and to show compassion and love for one another. May his soul rest in peace. — Anita Among, Speaker of Parliament
