Ugandan military chief and first son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has the attention of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee following his social media posts threatening serious confrontation against US Ambassador to Uganda William Popp. But as a top US senator warns Muhoozi, will he cease fire?
Gen Muhoozi claimed US Ambassador William Popp had disrespected President Yoweri Museveni, his father and Uganda’s ruler of nearly four decades, and that the envoy had also undermined the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda.
The Ugandan army chief also told US Ambassador William Popp to either apologize to President Museveni or get ready to leave Uganda by 9AM Monday, October 07, 2024.
Although Gen Muhoozi has since deleted his posts warning Ambassador Popp, a Senate Foreign Relations Committee Ranking Member has sent a clear warning to the Ugandan first son and military chief.
Senator Jim Risch, a republican representing the state of Idaho in the US senate, has made it very clear to Gen Muhoozi that the serious confrontation he has threatened to mete on Ambassador Popp will be could be so “problematic.”
Senator Risch also told Gen Muhoozi to be sure that will be “a serious response” to his actions if he dares confront the US envoy to Uganda.
Any further ‘confrontation’ will be very problematic and met with a serious response,” Senate Foreign Relations Committee Ranking Member Risch.
“US Ambassador Popp and US Mission in Uganda engage with the government and others in Uganda on a non-partisan basis in order to improve ties between the American and Ugandan people.”
As the clock ticks to 9AM Monday, this remains a developing story The Pearl Times is monitoring.
