Love or hate him, Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine is not about to stop changing the political landscape in Uganda. When some people are beginning to write him off, Bobi Wine, the Ugandan singer-turned-politician reemerges and shocks the naysayers.
Bobi’s latest move to build a party head office will undoubtedly shock Museveni as the youth from Gomba moves to help his NUP party, the political wing of the People Power Movement, a permanent home.
This July 12 morning, NUP held a press conference from the site where its new head office (headquarters) will be built. While you have been used to watching NUP press conferences and other events at the Kamwokya-based headquarters, the country’s main opposition party will soon have a new home around Makerere Kavule in Kampala Capital City’s Kawempe Division.
Bobi Wine led fellow party bosses to hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the new NUP party headquarters as the party plans to shift from Kamwokya to the Makerere office.
Party spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi explained that the Kamwokya office, which Bobi Wine donated to the party, had become too small for the party since it could not hold mega events and that the party had to keep on begging the principal to allow them to use his expansive Magere home for some events.
Ssenyonyi, who is also the Nakawa West MP, also revealed that the party will not totally leave Kamwokya but will execute their “future plans to make it a training center for our people.” Construction at the Makerere Kavule site is expected to start very soon, according to the party’s administration.
Leader of the opposition in Parliament Mathias Mpuuga, who is also the Nyendo-Mukungwe MP, said the party’s new head office was an exhibition of the party’s commitment to a permanent struggle.
NUP’s move to construct its head office is a challenge to Museveni’s NRM which has been struggling to build its headquarters for years, despite being in power for many years. But what will be more shocking to Museveni and his NRM is how fast NUP manages to build the head office on time.
