TEARS as Ssegirinya’s Mother is Blocked from Meeting Minister Norbert Mao

Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya’s mother Justine Nakajumba has been blocked from meeting Norbert Mao, the minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.

Ssegirinya and his Makindye West counterpart Allan Ssewanyana have been on remand for about a year for reportedly having a hand in the Masaka bijambiya killings.

When Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana were remanded last year, Norbert Mao not yet a minister in President Museveni’s government. But things changed last month when Mao and president Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni, who is also the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) national chairman signed a cooperation agreement with the Democratic Party (DP) leader.

Mao is now in charge of the country’s justice and constitutional affairs, and the issue of ensuring the release of the two National Unity Platform (NUP) MPs is key to pro-democracy forces.

But Mao’s new boss President Museveni has in recent month insisted that suspected killers should not be released on bail. This explains why Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana have been on remand for nearly one year.

With hope in Mao, Ssegirinya’s mother Nakajumba had come to meet the new minister to ask him to use his voice to ensure freedom for her son.

But Nakajumba was denied access to Mao’s office and told to return another day, with security blocking and telling her that the new minister was not in office today.

It should be remembered that this is not the first time Ssegirinya’s mother is storming the office of a top official in Museveni’s government over his son’s continued detention. In February 2022, Nakajumba stormed Parliament demanding the release of her son Ssegirinya. (Read Story Here).
