Museveni-Muhoozi Succession

State House Clarifies Muhoozi Presidential Ambitions after Museveni Endorsed Him as Successor

State House has sought to clarify the presidential ambitions of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba following reports and public debate over his political future after President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni endorsed him as his preferred successor.

A State House official said the debate surrounding Muhoozi’s ambitions had been complicated by what he described as misunderstandings and deliberate attempts to create political tension. Deputy Presidential Press Secretary and

Special Presidential Assistant in charge of the Press and Mobilization Faruk Kirunda has said Muhoozi had made his position clear, arguing that his ambition was to succeed Museveni rather than challenge the incumbent president for the same office.

“On Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s supposed bid for the Presidency, clearly he has stated that his bid is after H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and not challenging him for the seat,” Kirunda said in a statement.

He added that some people were misinterpreting the general’s intentions, while others were deliberately distorting them.

“Many are misunderstanding this while others are twisting it deliberately to create unnecessary anxiety and friction in the Ugandan public space,” Kirunda said.

The clarification comes amid growing attention to Muhoozi’s political activities through the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), the organisation he chairs, which has been conducting registration and endorsement drives across the country.

Kirunda defended the exercise, describing it as a method of measuring political support through direct engagement with individuals rather than relying on conventional opinion polls.

“PLU’s registration and endorsement drive is a smart method that no existing organisation has attempted before,” he said.

He compared the initiative to an opinion poll, but one that relies on identifiable individuals whose details can be verified.

“It’s like an opinion poll, but dealing with real people who have national IDs and contacts, targeting to have more members than the registered voters in the 2026 elections,” Kirunda said.

He argued that the approach offered a different way of assessing political support, contrasting it with claims sometimes made by political organisations on the basis of opinion polls.

“Some political groups often claim victory in elections based on opinion polls that used random people, who are neither members of the party nor voters, as respondents,” said said Kirunda, himself a PLU patriotic officer.

The PLU registration and endorsement campaign has become part of the wider discussion about Muhoozi’s political ambitions and the possibility of a succession arrangement after Museveni, who has governed Uganda since 1986.

Kirunda’s statement sought to distinguish between Muhoozi’s stated ambition to succeed the president and an attempt to contest against him, while defending the PLU’s mobilisation strategy as a way of establishing its national support base.

The statement does not, by itself, establish the scale of PLU membership or independently verify its target of exceeding the number of registered voters in the 2026 elections. It also appears to frame Muhoozi’s presidential ambitions as a succession plan rather than a challenge to Museveni.

Meanwhile, there are calls for a Ugandan judge to resign after he endorsed Muhoozi for President, as reported Here.
