Kampala — Police have recovered the decomposing body of a 52-year-old woman who was abducted from her home in Kigowa, Ntinda last Thursday, in a kidnapping case that has triggered widespread fear and outrage among residents.
The deceased, identified as Lydia Babirye, was reportedly taken from her residence before her captors allegedly turned her own phone against the family, using it to demand a ransom of Shs19 million in exchange for her release.

Her disappearance was later reported by relatives at Old Kampala Police Station, prompting an immediate missing person alert and the launch of coordinated investigations by security teams.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, detectives intensified inquiries that eventually led to the arrest of two suspects believed to have played a central role in the abduction and killing.
“One of the suspects, upon interrogation, led police to the house of his accomplice in Kiteredde Village, Kakiri Town Council, Wakiso District,” Owoyesigyire said.
Inside the suspect’s residence, officers made a grim discovery.
“The body was found in a decomposing state inside the suspect’s house, wrapped in a mattress cover and tied with ropes.”
Investigators also revealed that the suspects had already dug a grave within the same compound, indicating plans to secretly dispose of the remains.
The scene was sealed off and processed by forensic teams before the body was transported to KCCA City Mortuary for postmortem examination.
Both suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue, while authorities work to establish the full circumstances and motive behind the kidnapping and murder.
Officials from the Kampala Metropolitan Police have urged the public to stay vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities, noting a growing number of kidnapping-for-ransom incidents in the greater Kampala metropolitan area.
The investigation is ongoing.
