Kampala Woman MP Shamim Malende is expected to undergo surgery at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi Kenya.
Malende, aged 38 and a first time MP from main opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), was flown to Nairobi nearly a week ago for better treatment.
For months before being taken to Nairobi, Malende had been receiving treatment at Nsambya Hospital in Kampala.
Her latest health woes started in November 2024 when she was beaten by rogue security officers who raided parliament as MPs debated on the controversial coffee bill.
Presiding speaker Anita Among had suspended Malende and 11 other MPs over what she called “indiscipline.”
Malende was one of the opposition MPs that the security officers in plainclothes beat up and removed from parliament in the raid.
From the beating in November 2024, she was admitted at Nsambya Hospital for treatment. She was discharged days later.
Since then, Malende had not been well. Her party members and top leaders have been checking on her as her mother and other close relatives took care of her with the help of doctors.
Days after she was flown to Aga Khan University Hospital, Shamim Malende was expected to undergo surgery.
“Hon Shamim Malende going for surgery. Let’s keep her in prayers,” the MP’s media assistant wrote on April 16.
Brutality by security agencies and delayed justice by the courts have cost the Ugandan opposition. Months ago, the NUP lost Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya. Ssegirinya had been arrested on charges related to Masaka killings, and had been denied bail for long despite his worrying health condition. (See Details Here and There).
