Most top secondary schools in Uganda lowered their cut off points for senior one admissions. The Pearl Times brings you the list of top schools admitting students with only first grades for S1 class of 2025.
The slight reduction in the cut off points was necessitated by a reduction in the number of first grades in the 2024 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) results released by assessment body Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb) last month.
While PLE 2024 results released by Uneb indicated general improvement in performance compared with the class of 2023, it was clear that the number of first grades had reduced significantly. First grades run from aggregate four to aggregate 12.
While many top performing schools or Uneb examination centres had candidates scoring aggregate four, the best at primary level, in previous PLE sittitings, 2024 PLE was different.
In fact, many school owners silently complained how Uneb had tightened the grading system especially for Division One, with fewer candidates scoring the coveted aggregate four in the four subjects of English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science, and Social Studies and Religious Education.
It goes without saying that the cut off points are determined by the performance in PLE exams, among other factors (like availability of space which informs schools’ decisions on how many students it can accommodate).
So, the top schools have had to slightly revise their cut off points to match the PLE performance.
