The Uganda Police Force has heightened security ahead of tomorrow’s by-election in Kawempe North Constituency,
Patrick Onyango, Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson says all security agencies are on high alert to counter any hooliganism and disobedience that is related election violence.
He says that the security groups put on patrol includes Field Force Unit, General Duty Police, Military Police, Uganda Peoples Defence Forces, and 999 patrol vehicles.
Meanwhile, the National Unity Platform’s (NUP) Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya, has told journalists that they obtained reliable information of a residential house guarded by the security personnel, where pre-ticking of ballot papers was being done.
Rubongoya says that they went to the suspected residence on March 12, with Joel Ssenyonyi the Leader of Opposition, and the NUP flagbearer Erias Nalukoola Luyimbazi, and forced their way inside the home.
However, there was resistance from soldiers and armed individuals in civilian clothes guarding the premises, which escalated into a violent altercation resulting in the assault of some journalists and Rubongoya.
The vehicles of Nalukoola and Ssenyonyi were also shattered by stones, while, Steven Kibwiika, Spark TV’s camera operator, suffered severe injuries and was hospitalised after being assaulted.
Kawempe North seat fell vacant following the death of former MP Muhammad Ssegirinya in January.
