SCHOOL REOPENING: Education Ministry Orders Universities to Prioritize First Year Students

Uganda’s Ministry of Education and Sports has reminded universities and other tertiary institutions to give priority to first year students as higher education institutions reopen their gates to learners.

Universities and other higher learning institutions reopened for students on November 01 as ordered by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

At most of the universities, unvaccinated students were blocked from accessing campuses and lectures.

Government had encouraged university students and staff to take jabs ahead of reopening.

In a short statement on the day of reopening of all higher institutions of learning, the ministry of education and sports explained why universities and tertiary institutions should prioritize year one students.

“The reopening is to be handled in a phased manner, priority given to year one students to complete their year of study and progress, so as to create space for the new entrants,” said the ministry, which is led by first lady Janet Museveni.

The ministry also said Covid19 vaccination points had been established in most of the institutions.

“Please note that vaccination is still ongoing. Most institutions of learning have been made vaccination posts, making it easier for students, teachers and non teaching staff to get vaccinated.”
