A bus carrying pilgrims from Namugongo Martyrs Shrine in Wakiso District has overturned, leaving several injured.
The bus was carrying about 50 pilgrims who had come from Kenya to Uganda for the Martyrs Day celebrations marked every June 03.
The accident happened at UCI Cell in Osukuru Town Council on the Malaba-Jinja Highway. It involved a bus registration number KCQ 05Q which belonged to Kasima Mixed Secondary School.
Up to 51 passengers were in the school bus when the accident happened.
The bus lost control and overturned near the Uganda-Kenya border in the morning of Wednesday, June 4, 2025.
The bus driver, identified as Charles Theuri, was trying to give way to a truck, which was over speeding. The bus lost control in the process, veering off the road and overturning.
Theuri and up to 35 pilgrims sustained minor and serious injuries.
Most of them were being treated at the Tororo General Hospital.
It should be remembered that on Martyrs Day, a suicide bomber was killed as she tried to make way to a place of worship where she planned to detonate a bomb. (See Details about the suicide bomber and explosion Here).
Bus accidents have become rampant in recent weeks. Recently two Gateway buses were involved in two separate accidents, in which tens of people were injured as reported Here and There.
