SAD! Another Learner – this time a 6-year-old – Hangs Herself Over Transfer to Village School

A six-year-old pupil has become the latest learner to commit suicide over change of school.

Identified as Maureen Nantambi, the minor is said to have hanged herself at Bweyogerere Central Zone, Kira Municipality in Wakiso District.

Preliminary findings indicate that Nantambi’s body was found at about 6pm by her brother, a 13-year-old.

The deceased’s brother was returning from school when he found his sister’s body hanging on a cloth which had been tied on the middle bed of a three-decker bed, according to the deputy spokesperson of the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP), Luke Owoyesigyire.

Attempts by the brother to open the door were also reportedly futile since it had been locked from inside.

According to Owoyesigyire, Nantambi didn’t want to return to a village school in Buikwe.

Her father was expected to return her to a village school.

“The investigative team has also established, through the parents, that the deceased was pending to be returned to the village in Buikwe District, to a school she did not want,” said the KMP deputy police spokesperson.

The suicide incident happened a few days after a senior four student also hanged himself over change of school.

According to Owoyesigyire, on January 10, Emmanuel Okello, 18, a senior four student of Makerere College School and a son of Moses Opio, resident of Parliament village- Kitukutwe, Kiwologoma, Kira Municipality, Wakiso District, locked his father inside the house and committed suicide in the compound while his siblings had been taken to school.

“The father alleges that the deceased had informed them that he was no longer interested in going back to his former school, Makerere College. The father even got him a position at St Kizito SS Namugongo, but he wasn’t happy about the choice.
The father suspects it could be the cause if the suicide,” added Owoyesigyire.
