State minister for foreign affairs John Mulimba has spoken out on the fate of Ugandans stuck in Afghanistan.

On August 25, Uganda welcomed 51 evacuees from Afghanistan.

The evacuation followed the takeover of Kabul and other cities by the Taliban.

As the US, its allies and their troops lost the 20-year war, supposedly waged against terrorism, a refugee crisis emerged.

According to US President Joe Biden, the evacuation efforts via Kabul Airport are expected to end by August 31.

So far, according to the White House, over 70,000 people have been evacuated since August 14.

But, what happens to Ugandans stuck in Afghanistan?

According to Minister Mulimba, the minister of gender, labour and social development was contacted to find out whether there were Ugandan nationals externalized to Afghanistan.

“We were informed that none remained in Afghanistan, since their evacuation last year,” Mulimba, also Samia Bugwe North MP, told Parliament on August 25.

“We established that Ugandans working with the UN system were evacuated by the UN and taken to third countries. We also established that 10 Ugandans had been evacuated on flights to London. They are now in a 14 day quarantine and thereafter will travel to Uganda.”

The minister further revealed that there were two Ugandans stuck in Kabul.

“Through our contacts, we further established the presence of two Ugandans in Kabul and arrangements are being made to repatriate them,” said Mulimba.

“At this current time the known Ugandans in Afghanistan are only two. We are making every effort to look out for any others.”
