RIGATHI GACHAGUA IMPEACHED WHILE STILL ADMITTED AT KAREN HOSPITAL: The Kenyan Senate has late Thursday night voted to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. He was until Thursday night the country’s second most important official happened.
Rigathi Gachagua was suffering from chest pains and was expected to be under doctors’ monitoring for between 24 and 72 hours.
Paul Muite, lead counsel to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, asked Senate Speaker Amason Kingi for five more days to take the witness stand in his impeachment trial.
“The choice of the language choosing to appear is to be read with Article 145 which obligates the Senate to accord the DP an opportunity to be heard. I leave the matter in your hands, Speaker,” noted Muite.
“I suggest Article 145, sub-article 6(b) does not have the time limit of 10 days. In the interest of justice, given the weight of removing a DP from office, a couple of days. I would add humbly request that a couple of days I had in mind is up to Tuesday.”
But Senate continued and impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Senators found him guilty on five of 11 charges.
About half an hour before midnight, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, declared: “The senate has resolved to remove from office by impeachment His Excellency Rigathi Gachagua EGH, the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya. Accordingly, His Excellency Rigathi Gachagua EGH ceases to hold office.”
