R.I.P: Another Former Ugandan MP Dies

Former Iganga District Woman Member of Parliament Olivia Kabaale Kwagala, popularly known as “Muliro Mulege,” has died following a prolonged illness.

Kwagala, 57, died at a hospital in the capital Kampala where she had been admitted and bedridden for a considerable period, according to local party leaders.

The local NRM chapter in Iganga was planning to engage the secretariat in Kampala to mobilise support for the family during the burial arrangements.

President and ruling NRM chairman Yoweri Museveni had been informed about Kwagala’s deteriorating health.

Museveni was attending a thanksgiving ceremony hosted by Minister for the Presidency Milly Babalanda when he was informed about Kwagala’s condition.

It is said that the president began making contributions towards Kwagala’s hospital bills.

Kwagala represented Iganga District in Parliament from 2011 to 2016 after beating Beatrice Magoola, the mother of Obangaina hit maker Racheal Magoola.

It would not be long before Kwagala was ejected by Racheal Magoola who defended her seat in a subsequent term of office.

Beyond her parliamentary career, Kwagala was known for championing infrastructure and service delivery projects in Iganga Municipality.

Local leaders have praised her for advocating for the construction of a modern market to improve the working conditions of traders and boost the municipality’s commercial activities.

She was also vocal in demanding the upgrading of Iganga General Hospital to referral hospital status. Her advocacy had not yielded fruit by the time she breathed her last.
