Pope Leo XIV has appointed Reverend Simon Peter Engurait, a Ugandan born priest, as the Bishop of the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux in Louisiana in the United States of America.

According to preliminary materials provided to the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), Father Engurait was born on August 28, 1971.
Bishop Engurait will be turning 54 years old at the end of August 2025.
He was born in Ngora in Uganda.
The Bishop-elect is fluent in four languages: Ateso, English, Kishwahili, and Spanish.
Engurait went to St Peter’s College in Tororo, Uganda.
He would later go to Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans in Louisiana, United States.
In 1995, Engurait earned a bachelor’s degree from Makerere University in the Ugandan capital Kampala.
Four years later, in 1999, he graduated with a master of business administration from the Maastricht School of Management in The Netherlands.
In 2013, Engurait later bagged a master of divinity degree from Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans Louisiana.
Engurait was ordained to priesthood on May 25, 2013.
Following his ordination, Father Engurait served as parochial vicar at the Cathedral of Saint Francis de Sales in Houma from 2013 to 2015.
From 2015 to 2016, Engurait was parochial vicar at Saint Genevieve parish in Thibodaux.
From 2016 to 2017, he was at Christ the Redeemer Parish in Thibodaux.
Engurait also served as pastor of Saint Bridget Parish in Schriever in 2017.
He also served as vicar general of the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux from 2017 to 2024.
Engurait was also moderator of the curia since 2016.
Since 2024, he has been serving as the Diocesan Administrator since the death of Bishop Mario Dorsonville.
