Ibanda RDC Godfrey Mbetegyereize RDC Ibanda District
Muzamiru Bateyo and Godwin Tusiime, two prominent businessmen in Ibanda town, have avoided arrest by agreeing to remove the soil they dumped in the Kirimirire wetland along the Ibanda-Mbarara road.
The two individuals asked to sign a commitment agreement during a meeting led by the Ibanda Resident District Commissioner, Godfrey Mbetegyereize, following a directive for their arrest that was issued in early March.
The two committed to removing the soils by April 1 or face arrest.
Mbetegyereize expressed frustration about the failure of environmental and natural resource officers to perform their duties, attributing it to corruption.
He stressed the importance of following the president’s directives on wetland conservation.
“It is our responsibility to ensure that all wetlands are restored at all costs,” the RDC stated, reinforcing the government’s commitment to environmental protection.
Authman Ssebaduka, the Ibanda Municipality town clerk, criticized the slow response from municipal teams regarding enforcement and called for more decisive action to address environmental violations.
Robert Tumwesigye, the environment officer for Ibanda municipal council, emphasized the lack of consultation by developers with the technical team and pointed out the need for increased awareness and adherence to environmental regulations.
