A motion to censure security minister Maj Gen (Rtd) Jim Muhwezi from office over human rights violations has collapsed, with the opposition failing to get the required number of signatures by close of business on February 24.
While the opposition in Parliament, whose leader is Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine’s NUP deputy Mathias Mpuuga, needed 176 signatures, they only managed 88.
“We are not disappointed!” said Mpuuga after the collapse of the motion in its first stage.
But Mpuuga must be disappointed that over 20 opposition legislators refused to back the motion.
Further, no NRM MP sided with the opposition.
Government chief whip Thomas Tayebwa (Ruhinda North – NRM) saluted law makers from the ruling party, and bragged about the unity in the NRM.
Tayebwa further urged the opposition to stop ‘blackmailing’ Muhwezi and the government.
“Thank you NRM Parliamentary caucus for keeping the unity. Despite their dedicated mobilisation, by final day the opposition managed to raise only 88 signatures against the censure of comrade Jim Muhwezi. No single signature from. NRM. Over 20 opposition MPs refused to sign,” said the government chief whip.
“From the onset we told you that the petition was dead on arrival since it was aimed at blackmailing our hard working comrade and government. If any one wanted to test our unity as a party, they have seen. Let us now focus on national interests than victimisation of each other.”
