For years, George Desmond Kamurasi has lived largely away from the royal spotlight, building a private life in Britain while his cousin, the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, carried the highly public responsibilities of the Tooro throne.
Now, that quiet life is suddenly under a much brighter spotlight.
Kamurasi, 36, has been selected by the Tooro Royal Succession Committee as the preferred successor to King Oyo, according to journalist and businessman Andrew Mwenda. Fifteen of the 18 committee members who attended a September 4 meeting reportedly voted in his favour.
But beyond his royal bloodline and the succession debate, it is Kamurasi’s personal life that has begun attracting particular curiosity.
At the centre of that story is his wife, Abbey, a white British woman with whom the newly selected royal shares a young son.
The woman beside the man who could become Tooro’s King
Kamurasi married Abbey on July 4, 2026, according to information provided about his family life.
The marriage came before the latest dramatic turn in his life: his selection to potentially become the next Omukama of Tooro.
The couple already had a child before their wedding, giving Kamurasi a young family as he prepares for what could become an extraordinary change in status.
Unlike the highly public royal household associated with King Oyo, Kamurasi’s family life has largely unfolded away from Uganda’s royal stage.
There is limited publicly documented information about Abbey herself, and she has not occupied a prominent public role in Tooro affairs. That relative privacy makes the couple’s relationship particularly intriguing as attention turns to the man who could soon become the kingdom’s next monarch.
The spotlight will inevitably extend to his wife and child if Kamurasi proceeds through the remaining traditional stages of succession.
A royal who lived away from the palace
Kamurasi’s background is deeply rooted in the Babiito royal family.
He is the son of George Desmond “Jimmy” Mugenyi, the younger brother of former Tooro King Patrick David Matthew Olimi Kaboyo II.
That makes Kamurasi a first cousin of the late King Oyo.
His father, Prince Jimmy Mugenyi, also had a significant connection to the young Oyo. Historical accounts report that Mugenyi was appointed guardian to Oyo after the young prince became king in 1995 at the age of three. Mugenyi spent many years in the United Kingdom before later returning to Uganda.
Kamurasi’s own life has consequently been shaped by a mixture of royal heritage and life abroad.
He has maintained a considerably lower profile than Oyo, who grew up under constant public attention after becoming one of the world’s youngest reigning monarchs.
That difference may explain why relatively little has been known about Kamurasi’s private world until now.
Football and life away from royal ceremonies
Away from questions of succession, Kamurasi is understood to be a football enthusiast.
The sport provides a glimpse into the ordinary interests of a man whose family background is anything but ordinary.
For much of his adult life, he has lived outside Uganda, allowing him to experience a lifestyle considerably removed from the ceremonies, public appearances and cultural obligations associated with the Tooro monarchy.
That private existence could soon change dramatically.
If formally installed, Kamurasi will have to move from being a relatively obscure member of the royal family to the central figure of one of Uganda’s most prominent traditional institutions.
His wife and child would inevitably become part of that new public story.
From private family man to potential King
The transition could hardly be more dramatic.
One moment, Kamurasi was a 36-year-old royal living largely away from the Ugandan public eye and raising a young family with Abbey.
The next, his name is at the centre of a royal succession that has attracted national attention following Oyo’s death.
According to Mwenda, the Royal Succession Committee selected Kamurasi at a meeting held at Fort Motel in Fort Portal City.
The committee has 21 members, with 18 attending the September 4 meeting. Of those present, 15 reportedly voted for Kamurasi.
The selection, however, does not yet amount to a completed coronation.
The formal public announcement is expected after King Oyo’s burial, in accordance with the succession process described by the chairman of the committee, Omusuuga Charles Akiiki Kamurasi.
A new royal household
If Kamurasi is formally installed, Tooro will not simply be getting a new King.
It will be welcoming a new royal household.
His wife Abbey and their son will become part of the public image surrounding the new reign, just as Queen Mother Best Kemigisa and other members of Oyo’s household became familiar figures during his nearly three-decade reign.
But Kamurasi’s household will bring a distinctly different story.
His marriage to a woman from Britain, his years living abroad, his interest in football and his experience of raising a young family outside Uganda all point to a monarch whose personal journey has been markedly different from that of his predecessor.
The question now is how that private life will evolve once royal duties begin.
For a man who has spent years away from the glare of the Tooro throne, the greatest transformation may therefore not be the title itself.
It may be the sudden public interest in the wife, child and private world he once kept largely to himself.
It is important to remember that Kamurasi has been selected by the Royal Succession Committee, but the formal public announcement and subsequent traditional installation processes are still pending. Reports of his selection are based principally on Andrew Mwenda’s account and have not, at the time of writing, been replaced by a formal public announcement from the Tooro Kingdom.
