National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine seems unready to publicly apologize for labelling Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa’s son, an idiot during his mobilization rally in Luweero last week.
Opinion remains divided on Bobi Wine’s statements in Luweero. First Bobi Wine accused Museveni and his government of killing many Baganda so as to help members of a tiny ruling clique grab large swathes of land from members of Uganda’s biggest ethnic group.
Bobi Wine, a Muganda himself, rallied his fellow tribespeople to do something to stop the well-connected and wealthy from grabbing their land.
He went on to allege that Museveni and his NRA combatants had come with torn shirts and shoes with holes in them, were unable to buy themselves underwear but were now wasting billions to tax payers to celebrate their birthdays.
The singer-turned-politician was not yet done. He labelled Museveni’s son ‘an idiot’ and went ahead to claim that the president and the first son were planning to end his life.
Projecting himself as the Buganda kingpin, he predicted that the Baganda would punish whoever ended his life.
Top European diplomats recently shared sensitive security intelligence claiming that there was a plan to assassinate Bobi Wine, at least according to NUP and its leader. (See Details Here and There).
As in most cases when he is addressing gullible Ugandan masses, Bobi Wine did not offer details nor evidence to back up his claims. But he got the cheers and that is what mattered then.
As he continues with his countrywide tour largely uninterrupted, Bobi Wine has refused to apologize for his ‘tribal comments’ because he and his followers do not see any trace of such in the statements.
They believe the comments were a rallying call on different tribes to protect what belongs to them from being grabbed by some corrupt and ruthless men and women in government.
Bobi Wine labeled all those blasting him for his comments in Luweero hypocrites, and expressed no readiness to apologize to those defending tribalism and nepotism.
“They openly practice tribalism and nepotism in every sphere and institution, but they’re not ashamed to blame those who expose it and call them out. What a bunch of hypocrites!” he wrote.
Museveni has previously addressed the matter of tribalism in his government, defending his ethnic Banyankole and blasting whoever accuses him of entrenching nepotism and tribalism. (See Details Here and There).
Bobi Wine also regurgitated his threats to block Gen Muhoozi’s quest to succeed his father in 2026.
“Museveni thinks he can build his monarchy on the bones of our grandfathers. I want to tell him that will not happen.”
However, Muhoozi seems ready and prepared to succeed his father. Museveni himself recently ‘endorsed’ his son’s MK Movement, and so did hundreds of MPs. But it remains unclear if Muhoozi will run for president in 2026. (See Details Here, There and Over There).
