Omukama Oyo’s Body Leaves US as Tooro Braces for Emotional Final Journey of Its Fallen King

The king who ascended the Tooro throne as a three-year-old is coming home in a casket.

After nearly 31 years on the throne, Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV is making his final journey back to the kingdom he ruled for almost his entire life.

The remains of King Oyo have left the United States and are expected to arrive at Entebbe International Airport on Friday, September 4, 2026, setting the stage for an emotional homecoming and nine days of traditional mourning in Tooro.

King Oyo died on August 27, 2026, aged 34, while receiving treatment for aggressive cancer in the United States.

His death brought to an abrupt end the life of a monarch who became king before he was old enough to understand the weight of the crown, grew up under the scrutiny of history and eventually emerged as one of Uganda’s most recognisable traditional leaders.

Now, his final journey will take him through the country and back into the heart of Tooro.

Museveni to Receive King Oyo’s Body

The Government of Uganda and Tooro Kingdom have coordinated arrangements for the repatriation of the late king’s remains.

President Yoweri Museveni is expected to receive the body at Entebbe International Airport at about 10:00 a.m. on Friday.

The President is expected to pay his respects to the fallen monarch and convey condolences to the royal family and the people of Tooro.

From Entebbe, the remains will be flown by helicopter to Kyegegwa District.

That will mark the beginning of a solemn journey across Tooro, with the casket expected to be placed on an open carrier for a public procession towards Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal, the seat of the kingdom.

Along the route, mourners will have an opportunity to line the roads and pay their final respects.

For many, it will be the first and last opportunity to see their king being taken home.

From Kyegegwa to Karuziika Palace

The procession from Kyegegwa to Fort Portal is expected to transform the roads leading to Karuziika Palace into a vast corridor of mourning.

The journey will retrace, in a sense, the connection between the monarch and his subjects — only this time, the king will not be returning to preside over ceremonies, meet his people or speak about the future of his kingdom.

He will be returning for burial.

Once the casket reaches Karuziika Palace, responsibility for the next stage of mourning will pass to the Ababiito, the royal family and clan.

Traditional mourning rituals will continue for nine days.

The official mourning period begins with the arrival of the king’s body at Karuziika.

The nine-day period is expected to be filled with traditional rites, prayers, tributes and ceremonies as the kingdom prepares to lay its monarch to rest.

A State Funeral for a King

King Oyo will not only be mourned as a cultural leader.

His burial will also carry the full weight of a state funeral.

President Museveni has directed that the late king be accorded a state funeral, including military honours and a gun salute.

National flags are also expected to fly at half-mast for three days around the burial.

The arrangements reflect the extraordinary position King Oyo occupied in Uganda’s history — a traditional ruler whose reign began in childhood and continued into adulthood.

A Three-Year-Old Became King

Few modern monarchies have witnessed a succession as extraordinary as that of Oyo.

In 1995, following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, the three-year-old prince was installed as the Omukama of Tooro.

He was one of the world’s youngest monarchs at the time.

For almost three decades, the young prince grew into his role before the eyes of the kingdom.

His childhood was inseparable from the institution he inherited.

While other children were growing up away from public attention, Oyo’s life unfolded beneath the weight of the crown.

His reign survived the transition from childhood to adulthood and from a traditional monarchy adapting to a changing Uganda to a modern kingdom seeking to remain relevant to younger generations.

His death at only 34 therefore represents not merely the passing of a young man, but the sudden end of an era that began when he was barely old enough to speak.

Grief Deepens as Images of His Final Journey Emerge

The emotional impact of King Oyo’s death intensified after photographs and videos showing his casket beginning its journey from Dallas-Fort Worth Airport circulated on social media.

For mourners, the images offered a stark reminder of the finality of his death.

One user captured the painful contrast by noting that the king had travelled first-class to the United States for treatment but was returning “like luggage.”

Others responded with messages of grief and traditional Tooro expressions of mourning, including “Omukama Atulize” and “Enkuba Etutire.”

The expressions reflected the depth of the loss being felt across Tooro.

Nyanjura: ‘My Heart Is Completely Shattered’

Among those who struggled to contain their emotions was Doreen Nyanjura, the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) Head of Special Interest Groups and former Deputy Lord Mayor of Kampala.

Nyanjura reacted emotionally to the images and videos of King Oyo’s body as they circulated online.

“The devastating images and videos of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru in a box are a sight too painful to bear. I just can’t find the strength to look at them… But Why must the good, pure-hearted souls be taken from us while the evil continue to roam free and are very healthy? My heart is completely shattered. Omukama Atulize indeed.”

Her reaction came after she had earlier paid tribute to King Oyo at PFF headquarters.

During that tribute, Nyanjura highlighted the king’s commitment to environmental conservation, including his climb of the Rwenzori Mountains.

She also remembered his interest in modern agriculture, sports and youth empowerment.

But perhaps most importantly, she spoke about his Christian faith.

She described Oyo as a king who “deeply loved the Creator” while remaining conscious that he served a higher authority.

Video of the tribute, during which she broke down and wept, circulated widely.

Nyanjura later joined a cancer run organised in honour of the late monarch.

The King Who Sought to Connect Tradition and Modernity

King Oyo’s reign was shaped by an unusual challenge: how to remain a traditional monarch while connecting with a rapidly changing generation.

He inherited the throne as a child but eventually became an adult monarch in a country where young people make up a significant part of the population.

His public engagements frequently touched on issues beyond traditional royal functions.

Environmental conservation, agriculture, sports and youth empowerment became part of his public legacy.

His climb of the Rwenzori Mountains, in particular, became a powerful symbol of his connection to the natural heritage of the region.

His approach helped present the Tooro monarchy as an institution capable of preserving its traditions while engaging with contemporary development issues.

What Happens After the Nine Days?

While Tooro mourns its fallen king, the kingdom is also preparing for the continuation of the monarchy.

The kingdom has confirmed that King Oyo left behind a young prince.

However, the identity of the young prince is expected to be revealed according to Tooro customs at the appropriate time.

The revelation will begin another chapter in the history of a monarchy that has now lost a king who himself inherited the throne at an extraordinarily young age.

For the moment, however, succession is secondary to mourning.

The kingdom must first bury its king.

Tooro Prepares for a Historic Farewell

Preparations have intensified throughout Fort Portal and surrounding areas ahead of the arrival of the remains.

Clean-up activities have been undertaken in the city, while Karuziika Palace and the royal burial grounds at Karambi are being prepared for the ceremonies ahead.

Earlier arrangements had pointed to a Thursday arrival, but an updated programme issued by the kingdom confirmed Friday, September 4.

That means the kingdom now faces a compressed period of final preparations before the arrival of the body.

From Entebbe to Kyegegwa, and from Kyegegwa through the streets of Fort Portal to Karuziika Palace, the journey is expected to draw large crowds.

For a kingdom that watched Oyo grow from a three-year-old prince into its longest-serving living symbol, the procession will carry enormous emotional weight.

A King Comes Home

King Oyo spent almost his entire life as Omukama.

He inherited a crown before he could comprehend it.

He grew up with it.

He carried it into adulthood.

And now, at just 34, he is coming home without it.

His final journey will end at Karuziika Palace, where the traditional mourning rites will begin before his burial.

For nine days, Tooro will pause to mourn.

There will be prayers, traditional ceremonies, tributes and memories.

Then the guns will salute.

The flags will fly at half-mast.

And the kingdom will lower its king into his final resting place.

But the story of Oyo’s reign will not end there.

For a monarch who spent nearly 31 years on the throne, his legacy is now left to the kingdom he inherited as a child — and to the young prince whose emergence will eventually signal the beginning of Tooro’s next chapter.
