NTV Uganda reporter Ali Mivule has pinned Greater Masaka Regional Police Commander (RPC) Enoch Abaine for plotting to kill him in December 27 Kyabakuza fracas.
Mivule, NBS TV reporter Daniel Lutaaya and Ghetto Media cameraman Ashraf Kasirye were injured as police attempted to disperse supporters of National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.
Although Bobi Wine claimed Kasirye was shot at, police spokesperson Fred Enanga dismissed this allegation, saying the Ghetto Media cameraman, Lutaaya and Mivule were hit by teargas canisters.
Now, Mivule says RPC Abaine was responsible for an attempt at killing him.
“Police, your Greater Masaka Regional Police Commander (RPC) Enoch Abaine almost ended my life today,” wrote Mivule.
“Abaine, you shot at me – reason, filming your misdeeds of shooting at people. Hope you have now got your satisfaction of harming the messengers.”
But on December 28, Enanga told reporters in Kampala that Mivule had failed to provide evidence to prove his allegations.
“The problem with journalists is that they don’t provide police with sufficient evidence; they only come out on social media,” said Enanga at the Uganda Media Centre.
“I talked to Ali Mivule and asked him to provide digital evidence showing how journalists were targeted in Masaka. This proof will help us pin these officers.”
At the press conference, journalists walked out of security spokespersons in protests of police brutality, heavy deployment and the publicists’ failure to address the issue.
