Col (Rtd) Charles Okello Engola, the Ugandan State Minister for Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations, is dead. Minister Engola was shot dead by his bodyguard at his home in Kyanja in the capital Kampala.
The junior labor minister’s shooting happened on Tuesday, May 02, a day after the country joined the rest of the world to mark Labor Day.
The bodyguard, said to be a UPDF soldier, was reportedly heard screaming over the non-payment of his salary before he opened fire and started shooting aimlessly at anyone and anything in Kyanja near the police station, according to The Observer, which also reported that eyewitnesses had counted over 20 bullets as having been fired before several armed security officers responded
The body guard later shot himself.
Chairing plenary this Tuesday morning, Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among told the House: “This morning, I received sad news that Hon Engola has been shot by his bodyguard and after, shot himself. May his soul rest in peace. That was God’s plan. We can’t change anything.”
Speaker Among herself months ago claimed that some people wanted to assassinate while Minister Persis Namuganza claimed that she had survived an assassination attempt. (See Details Here and There).
