MUNYARWANDA? Muhoozi Ready for DNA Tests to Prove He’s Museveni’s Son

Kampala, UgandaUganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has directly confronted long-standing online rumours questioning his paternity and ethnic heritage, declaring that he is ready to undergo a DNA test to prove he is the biological son of President Yoweri Museveni.

In a post on X on Sunday, June 28, 2026, the outspoken military leader addressed critics who have accused him of being “too angry” to be Museveni’s son and labelled him a Munyarwanda — a term referring to someone of Rwandan descent.

“I saw someone the other day saying that I’m definitely a Munyarwanda and can’t be Mzee Museveni’s son,” Muhoozi wrote. “Ngu that I’m too angry to be Mzee’s son. He demanded a DNA test to prove if Mzee is my father. I am ready for the test.”

He added: “Ugandans who accuse me of being a Munyarwanda don’t know our family. Actually, me and late Fred Rwigyema are the calmest people in this family.”

The remarks quickly sparked widespread discussion across East Africa, with many users reacting to the general’s characteristically blunt style. Some supporters dismissed the rumours as baseless political attacks, while critics pointed to Muhoozi’s fiery temperament as further fuel for the speculation.

Opposition Pushback and the Tanzania Angle

The latest exchange adds to a long-running feud with opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine.

In a post on June 16, 2026, Bobi Wine stated: “I was born in Uganda, and you were born in Tanzania, let’s not forget that!”

Muhoozi responded at the time by downplaying the significance, saying that “Tanzanians are our beloved brothers.”

Muhoozi was born on April 24, 1974, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where his parents were living in exile during the turbulent years before Yoweri Museveni took power in 1986.

Official family history and biographical records identify him as the son of President Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni.

While his birthplace has never been in dispute, political opponents have occasionally cited it to question his Ugandan identity in the context of political rivalries

Background to the Rumours

Questions about Muhoozi’s parentage have circulated for years in Ugandan opposition circles and on social media, often tied to broader debates about political succession within the Museveni family.

Official records consistently identify Muhoozi as the eldest son of President Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni.

Such claims are not new in Ugandan politics, where ethnicity, family lineage, and questions of identity have frequently featured in public discourse.

Museveni himself has faced similar rumours during his decades in politics.

Muhoozi’s reference to the late Fred Rwigyema appears intended to push back against ethnic stereotyping while acknowledging the family’s historical ties within the region.

Muhoozi’s Public Profile

As Chief of Defence Forces and a four-star general, Muhoozi remains one of Uganda’s most influential and polarising public figures.

He has repeatedly signalled presidential ambitions, although he stepped back from contesting the most recent elections in favour of his father.

Known as the “tweeting general,” Muhoozi frequently uses social media to make provocative statements, some of which are later deleted or clarified. His latest comments come amid continuing debate over Uganda’s political future as President Museveni, now in his 80s, remains in office.
