Museveni and Muhoozi
First son and chief of defence forces Gen Kainerugaba Muhoozi wants Museveni to drop old faces from cabinet and other government positions.
On April 02, 2026, Muhoozi appointed Deo Akiiki as Uganda’s military attaché to Washington DC, sending the former army deputy spokesperson to represent Uganda’s defence interests and to strengthen military ties with the United States.
After appointing a relatively young Akiiki, hitherto his military assistant, Muhoozi then complained that most of the ambassadors representing Uganda abroad were so old. He was also unhappy that some of the ambassadors have held these diplomatic roles since 1986.
“I hear some have been Ambassadors since 1986? How is that possible? Their appointments are older than 80% of Ugandans? We want young people as Ambassadors,” wrote Muhoozi.
The year 1986 is particularly important because Muhoozi was just 12 years old and his father took power after a five-year bush war.
Museveni has since been president and was in January reelected for another five-year term that will extend his reign to 45 years by 2031.
He says Uganda should emulate Rwanda whose envoys are younger and more energetic.
“Our brothers in Rwanda have the youngest diplomatic corps in Africa, then we have the oldest? How?? We are going to have a young, energetic and patriotic diplomatic corps,” he further wrote.
Muhoozi went on to say that in the 2026 government – including cabinet, diplomats and other government roles – should be given to young people.
“I completely agree with the demand of almost all Ugandans. In the 2026 government, we do not want to see old faces. The new government must be 80% young,” he demanded.
Recently, there are calls to appoint either Norbert Mao or Muhoozi himself as vice president. (See Details Here and There).
