Minister Judith Nabakooba and Driver Discharged from Hospital after Accident That Killed Kyengera Resident

Lands, Housing and Urban Development Judith Nabakooba and her driver have been discharged from hospital after an accident that killed a Kyengera resident.

The accident happened at about 8:30am at Kibukula Swamp along the Kampala-Masaka Highway, according to SP Michael Kananura, the spokesperson of the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety at Uganda Police Force.

Minister Nabakooba and her driver were travelling in a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado registration number UBR 811D when the accident happened. They were said to be heading to Rwampara where the minister was expected to hand over land titles.

A pedestrian identified as Flavia Batera was killed on spot.

“We confirm a fatal road traffic crash involving the Minister for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Judith Nabakooba, which occurred today, 1st April 2026, at approximately 8:30 AM at Kibukula Swamp along the Kampala–Masaka Highway,” said SP Kananura.

“The crash involved vehicle number UBR 811D, a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and a pedestrian identified as Batera Flavia, a resident of Kyengera, who died on the spot.”

The traffic police spokesperson further added that both “the driver of the vehicle and the Minister sustained minor injuries.”

Kananura further confirmed that the minister and her driver were rushed to Nkozi Hospital for medical attention but were later discharged.

“The body of the deceased was conveyed to Gombe Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination,” he added.

“The vehicle involved was towed and is currently parked at the police station pending inspection as Investigations kick start.”

Road accidents are a public health concern in Uganda. According to a recently released annual crime report, in 2025, a total number of 26,044 road traffic crashes were reported compared to 25,107 crashes recorded in 2024, representing an increase of 3.7 percent.

Fatal crashes also increased from 4,434 in 2024 to 4,602 in 2025, while serious and minor crashes increased by 3.3 percent and 4.5 percent, respectively. Although road crashes continue to increase, the trend over the past five years indicates that the rate of increase gradually slowed.
