The pediatric surgery ward at the Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH has been expanded to accommodate the increasing cases in the region.
The ward was expanded with support from Bethany Kids, a Non-Governmental Organisation.
The hospital, which handles between 69 and 100 pediatric surgical cases per month, had been struggling with space constraints, often forcing mothers to sleep on the floor.
Dr Felix Oyania, the head of the pediatric surgery at the referral hospital, said the hospital, which offers free services of pediatric surgery, will improve access to life-saving treatment for affected children.
He added that the number of surgeries will also increase from 100 to 150 monthly.
Dr Deus Twesigye, the acting director of MRRH, commended Bethany Kids for always supporting the hospital with sundries and expertise in offering pediatric services.
““We are celebrating the expansion of our Paediatric Surgical Ward from 15 beds, courtesy of Bethany Kids, bringing relief to children and mothers. We are grateful for Bethany Kids’ partnership in pediatric surgery and rehabilitation,” added Dr Twesigye.
Ivan Nuwagaba, the country director of Bethany Kids says they have noticed delays in pediatric surgeries due to a shortage of specialists, affecting the timely delivery of quality healthcare.
“There has been an increase in the number of children with pediatric malformations. We are extending the existing ward because of the rising cases, and we had space constraints. As Bethany Kids, we stepped in to support the construction of this extension to accommodate more children,” he explained.
He adds that Bethany Kids stepped in to support the construction of the extension to accommodate more children.
Some of the surgeries carried out to babies include for those with congenital abnormalities like babies without nerves in the lower part of the intestines, babies born with the esophagus joint by air way or even babies with parts of the intestines missing, among others.
