Worry as Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital is Overwhelmed by Mpox Cases

Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital authorities have raised concern over the increasing cases of MPOX currently undergoing clinical management at the hospital’s Infectious Diseases Treatment Center.

Halson Kagure, the Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital Public Relations Officer confirmed 26 patients currently undergoing clinical management at the hospital’s Infectious Diseases Treatment Center.

Kagure notes that the admissions have consistently exceeded 15 patients for the past weeks yet managing them is proving costly and the hospital must provide meals and other expenses.

Since the outbreak, the hospital has seen 126 patients, with 92 testing positive and 81 discharged. Kagure emphasized the importance of seeking medical attention if symptoms such as skin rush, lymph nodes, fever body ache among others occur while also warning against consuming wild animals.

Previously, Dr Deus Twesigye, the Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital Acting Director, had warned of the post Christmas surge of the cases due to social behaviors and interactions with individuals from Kampala now the epicenter.

In the recent meeting with Mbarara city authorities, Dr Twesigye urged them to mobilize resources and support the hospital which currently shoulders the cost of patient care including meals.

Nationally, the Ministry of Health report suggests that by January 28, the country has recorded 2479 with Mbarara city being the second most affected area after Kampala.
