Makerere University, Uganda’s oldest and largest higher learning institution, has today, Monday, May 17, started its 71st graduation ceremony.
During the weeklong ceremony, Chancellor Prof Ezra Suruma will confer degrees and award diplomas to 12,550 graduands.
Of these, 6,433 (51 per cent) are female and 6,117 (49 per cent) male.
A total of 108 will be conferred upon PhDs.
Some 38 (35.2 per cent) of these new PhD holders are female while 70 (64.8 per cent) are male.
Some 1,160 will be conferred upon Masters degrees.
Of these, 434 (37.4 per cent) are female while 726 (62.6 per cent) are male.
A total of 11,151 will be awarded undergraduate degrees.
Of these, 5,919 (53 per cent) are female while 5,232 (47 per cent) are male.
Prof Suruma will award 115 Graduands postgraduate diplomas.
Of these, 33 (28.7 per cent) are female while 82 (71.3 per cent) are male.
Undergraduate diplomas will go to 16 graduands. Of these, nine are female while seven are male.
As oppposed to previous ceremonies, the 71st graduation will not have as much pomp, glamour and color.
The 8:30am-midday event, running from Monday through Friday, will be “blended” to follow Covid19 prevention guidelines.
Only PhD Graduands, Master’s Degree Graduands, and First Class Honours Degreee Graduands that will attend physically, with masks on, at the Freedom Square.
“All other Graduands (not in the specified categories) will graduate virtually. The Graduands should remain at home and follow the Graduation on NTV, UBC Radio and live streaming on Makerere University social media pages,” said the university in a statement.
“All parents, guardians, spouses, relatives and friends are advised to follow the Graduation Ceremony on NTV, UBC Radio and virtually on Makerere University social media pages.”
