Northern Uganda-based Gulu University has released the list showing names of students admitted on government sponsorship on the national merit scheme.
The list includes over 100 students who will pursue various courses or academic programs at the university.
Only 13 academic programs or courses were considered for the few slots available to the university under the national merit scheme of government sponsorship which is meant for best performing students.
Most of these are science, technology or business related, which is part of government’s deliberate efforts to promote sciences by offering over 70 per cent of scholarships to science-based students.
Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery took a lion’s share of the government sponsorship national merit schemes with 42 students admitted from various schools and districts to pursue this coveted science program.

Gulu University is one of about a dozen public universities in Uganda most of which are regional based.
The other public universities are Makerere University and its business school of MUBS, Kabale University, Kyambogo University, Muni University, Soroti University, Mountains of the Moon University, Mbarara University of Science and Technology, and Busitema University.
Every year, government sponsors up to 4,000 students to attain university education.
Makerere University and MUBS recently admitted almost 1,800 students on government sponsorship under the national merit scheme.
