LIST of MPs Having Sleepless Nights Over Risk of Losing Parliamentary Seats Because of Election Petitions

LIST of MPs Having Sleepless Nights Over Risk of Losing Parliamentary Seats Because of Election Petitions

Amelia Kyambadde, Christopher Bakashaba, Cissy Namujju and Justine Nameere.

Parliament has set dates for the swearing-in of MPs elected in January 2026. But despite being on the list and being allocated a schedule for oath taking, at least 30 of the 529 elected legislators are having sleepless nights over election petitions seeking to overturn their victories. The Pearl Times delves into the list of MPs having sleepless nights over risk of losing parliamentary seats because of election petitions.

High Courts in Masaka, Mbarara, Fort Portal, Lira, Hoima, Soroti, Moroto, Luweero, Iganga, Kumi, Pader, Tororo, and Mukono have their work cut out for them as petitions challenging results from the 2026 parliamentary elections have been filed in areas of their jurisdiction.

Even the Electoral Commission (EC) lawyers will be busy as they have been listed as respondents in most of these election petitions, meaning that they will have a lot of explaining to do in courts of law.

There will be issues to do with ballot stuffing, bribery, transmission of results, altering of declaration of results forms, and security.

There will be a lot of cases dealing with district woman MP elections since up to 24 of the 30 of the election petitions so far filed are related to disputes in the handling of elections of district woman MPs.

Courts will decide they will cancel election results and order by-elections or to dismiss petitions, or to cancel election results and declare petitioners (losers) as duly elected MPs (winners).

In Mbarara, the high court there will decide a case involving Robert Mwesigwa Rukaari, who is challenging the Mbarara city North election results that indicated that businessman Christopher Bakashaba won.

Another notable case involves the results of the Mawokota North MP election where singer and politician Hillary Innocent Kiyaga, popularly known as Dr Hilderman, of the National Unity Platform (NUP), is seeking to overturn the former Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Minister  Amelia Kyambadde.

There is also a petition involving the Kayunga District Woman MP results where the victory of NUP’s Harriet Nakwedde has been challenged by Jackline Birungi Kobusingye. The High Court in Mukono will handle this petition.

Former minister Sarah Opendi Achieng will also be in court to challenge the election victory of Angella Akoth in the Tororo High Court. The winner and loser in this election were separated by just a few votes.

The People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) could also lose its parliamentary seat secured by Asinansi Nyakato, as NRM’s Dianah Mugenyi Abwooli has filed a petition.

Also, Joseph Sewungu of NUP could lose his seat to  real estate dealer Ismael Ssemakula who lost the race by just 46 votes.

Elsewhere, Rose Nalubowa of NUP is challenging the victory of  Justine Nameere of the NRM as Masaka City Woman MP. Also being challenged is the election of Cissy Namujju Dionizia as Lwengo District Woman MP.

Also, the election of NUP’s Joan Namutawe as Masaka District Woman MP is being challenged by NRM’s Joanita Nalule.
