Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb) has issued a last call for normal registration of new centres and transitional candidates. The call is for candidates registering under the new Uneb centres and transitional candidates for end of O-level or the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) based on the old curriculum.
Uneb says the deadline for both exam categories, normal and transitional exams, is Friday, June 21, 2024 after which late registration will attract surges: a 100 per cent surcharge for late registration for the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), and a 50 per cent surcharge for UCE and the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE), each.
According to Uneb, registration fees for normal registration stand at Shs34,000 for PLE, Shs164,000 for UCE and 186,000 for UACE.
The window for late registration closes on July 31, 2024. After that time, not even a 100 per cent surcharge will help one register.
The assessment body says 1,309,852 candidates had so far registered for all the four examinations. This number includes those who have registered for transitional examinations.
It also says that up to 51 per cent of the registered candidates are females while 49 per cent are males. More female candidates (standing at 56 per cent) registered for the transitional exams compared to male candidates (44 per cent).
A year and a half away from the 2026 general elections, Uneb has advised those with political ambitions to use the last opportunity under the old curriculum.
“UNEB advises all those interested and qualify to register for the transitional examination to make use of this one-off opportunity. This is the last time UNEB is assessing learners based on the old curriculum,” the assessment body said in a statement.
“People intending to run for political offices, but do not have a UCE certificate are specifically encouraged to register now.”
There is also an opportunity for adults who skipped PLE. “Adults of 20 years above, who did not sit for PLE, can register as well. They only need to seek the permission of the UNEB Executive Director from our offices in Ntinda, show proof age, and MUST be Ugandans.”
Uneb spokesperson Jennifer Kalule has offered information on other groups that qualify for transitional exams.
“Others who qualify to register for the transitional examination include; learners who sat UCE in 2023 or earlier and would like to improve their grades; those who registered for UCE in 2023 or earlier, but did not sit; those who failed to register for UCE in 2023,” she said.
“These must have sat PLE in 2018 or earlier; as well as learners whose results were cancelled due to examination malpractice.
The transitional examination will be run alongside the other UCE examination in October/November this year. Registration for the transitional examination can be done from any of the Private Halls accredited by UNEB to register candidates in different parts of the country, or other UNEB examination Centers, including USE Schools.”
