Kawempe North: Low Voter Turnout at Several Polling Stations

There has been a low voter turnout in the Kawempe North by-election this morning at several polling stations.

According to the electoral process rules, voting should start at 8:00 AM, but by 10:30 AM, there were only a few voters present, even though the election materials were set up by 7:30 AM.

According to electoral regulations, at least ten voters must be present to witness the sealing of election materials before polling can commence. However, many polling stations had only six to eight early voters, causing a standstill.

Peter Emorut, a commissioner at the Electoral Commission, observed similar delays across multiple polling stations, he confirmed that while all preparations were in place, voting had not yet started in most areas.

Muganda Donald a resident of Mbogo attributed the low early turnout to fear, following a tense campaign period marked by security crackdowns, particularly on opposition supporters.

He stated that fears of potential disruptions contributed to the slow start at polling stations.

The hotly contested seat has nine candidates vying for it, the seat fell vacant following the death of Hon Muhammad Ssegirinya.

They are Murerwa Hanifa Karadi (independent), Luwemba Lusswa Muhammed (independent), Luyimbazi Elias Nalukoola (National Unity Platform), Mukiibi Sadat (Forum for Democratic Change), Nsereko Moses (independent), Musiitwa Ismail (People’s Progressive Party), Mutazindwa Muhamood (independent), Kasacca Henry Mubiru (Democratic Party), and Faridah Nambi Kigongo (National Resistance Movement).
