Janet Museveni Misses Husband’s Swearing-in Ceremony

Ugandan first lady Janet Museveni has missed her husband’s swearing-in ceremony. President Yoweri Museveni took oath for his 2026-2031 term after winning reelection for another five term. 

This will be Museveni’s seventh successive term since 1986 since there were no elections until 1996.

Museveni was sworn in at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in the capital Kampala at an event attend by heads of state or representatives, mostly from across the continent.

Before Museveni took oath, Electoral Commission (EC) chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama declared him the duly elected president of Uganda per results from the January 2026 presidential election.

After the oath taking, the Chief Justice handed the president a National Flag, Presidential Standard Flag, National Anthem copy, National Coat of Arms, and Public Seal, all of which symbolize the official start of his new term.

Unlike at previous inauguration events where Janet Museveni Museveni accompanied her husband, today was a different story.

Instead, it was Museveni’s daughter Natasha Karugire who accompanied Museveni to Kololo Independence Grounds. As Museveni took oath, Natasha Karugire stood next to him.

This is the second time that Janet Museveni has not attended Museveni’s swearing-in ceremony since 1986, the first one being the 1986 inauguration.

Museveni had taken power after a five-year bush war and Janet Museveni was still in exile in Sweden. As Museveni took oath on the steps of Parliament building in Kampala, Janet Museveni was absent.

Janet Museveni has not appeared in public for a few months. She even missed her granddaughter’s wedding ceremony. (See Details Here).
