President Yoweri Museveni has fired back at Andrew Mwenda for labelling him senile. Museveni, Uganda’s president of 40 years, is aged 82.
He took power in 1986 after a five-year bush war following the contested elections of 1980. Museveni was sworn in for another five-year term, at the end of which (in 2031), he will have ruled the country for 45 years non-stop.
Andrew Mwenda recently argued that Museveni was no longer as capable of monitoring government as he used to do.
In his view, Andrew Mwenda says that Museveni was being sold dubious project deals from which conmen were getting billions of tax payers’ money.
“That the president is old and exhausted, both intellectually and physically. He has a limited ability to monitor many things across a large spectrum of sectors,” wrote Mwenda weeks ago.
“So, they front individuals who sell him projects of dubious value, get blue letters instructing the government to release huge sums of money for these projects, then they earn huge commissions from them, and nothing happens.”
Mwenda further said that because of exhaustion that comes with advanced age, Museveni usually finds it easier to abandon such dubious projects because he cannot fight conflicts arising from the projects by conmen.
“Because the persons involved are close to the president, they know that Museveni is disinclined to fight many wars at multiple fronts given his advanced age,” Mwenda further wrote.
“Seeing that he is being duped right, left and centre by those closest to him, he just abandons the struggle. That is the state of Uganda.”
In response, Museveni has said that he is still able to defend Uganda using three tools.
“Mr. Mwenda, thank you for declaring me senile and incapable of judging right,” wrote Museveni.
“You will, however, discover that at 82, I am still able to defend Uganda and myself with the Bible, the AK-47 and the pen.”
