Makerere University Guild President James Churchill Ssentamu has officially refused to apologize and resign as his father Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu and supporters of main opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) have been demanding after photos of him with President Yoweri Museveni appeared online.
The photos were taken as Museveni launched the 2025 Makerere Research and Innovation Week at the Freedom Square of Makerere University main campus.
Nyanzi is the NUP national mobilizer and elder brother to Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine, the leader of the National Unity Platform.
Bobi Wine is Ssentamu’s uncle but the party denied him the flag for the Makerere University guild presidential race, forcing him to run and win as an independent.
Ssentamu has this Friday, April 11, 2025, told reporters that his father has an independent role of the national mobiliser for the NUP whose job description does not include policing Makerere University guild issues.
As such, Ssentamu said, his father’s role “only ends [with being NUP national mobiliser]” and that Nyanzi is not his “advisor” as guild president.
The youthful Makerere guild president also acknowledged that while the Ssentamu family has in recent years been at the forefront of fighting oppression in Uganda, and that while he salutes them for their contribution and courage, the act of him welcoming and taking pictures with Museveni do not mean that he has betrayed the struggle.
He added that as a visitor to Makerere University, Museveni deserved to have the presence of a guild president who had to seek a balance between his personal values and the public responsibility as vested in him as the leader of over 45,000 students at the hill.
In any case, Nyanzi Ssentamu says there should be some level of tolerance even in the face of diverse political views.
He blasted those calling for his resignation, labelling them “opportunists” and propagandists.
