Muhoozi Leaving CDF Job in a Few Months

Peter Elwelu Will Pay for His Betrayal in Full: Muhoozi Vows as He Claims Retired General Would Be Dead if He Hadn't Surrendered UPDF Chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba says retired Gen Peter Elwelu's alleged rebellion was crushed within a week, warning politicians against interfering in military and security matters Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has vowed that retired Lt Gen Peter Elwelu will face the full consequences of what he described as betraying the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF), declaring that the former deputy army chief would have been killed had he not surrendered. In a series of statements, Muhoozi said Elwelu was fortunate to have surrendered on his instructions, claiming that security forces had already defeated the retired general's alleged rebellion. "Elweru's 'rebellion' lasted for 1 week before we crushed it. He was lucky he surrendered as I instructed him too. Otherwise, he would be in the ground right now," Muhoozi said. The army chief added that the government would not tolerate anyone threatening the country's peace and security, regardless of their position or identity. "In Uganda, whoever you are, you'll be destroyed if you threaten peace and security!" he declared. Muhoozi's remarks come amid heightened public attention surrounding Elwelu's arrest in Soroti City and reports of possible negotiations involving the retired general, President Yoweri Museveni and the UPDF leadership. Muhoozi warns politicians against military interference The CDF also issued a stern warning to politicians whom he accused of contemplating interference in military and security affairs, saying such efforts would be futile and could have serious consequences for those involved. "I have warned politicians in the past from even thinking of interfering in military/security matters. First of all, it will have absolutely no effect. None. Secondly, it will bring catastrophic problems on those politicians themselves," he said. The warning comes as political leaders and other public figures continue to weigh in on Elwelu's arrest, with some reportedly seeking assurances regarding his personal safety and the circumstances surrounding his detention. Muhoozi did not identify the politicians he was warning in his latest statements. However, he singled out former minister Musa Ecweru for praise, describing the legislator as a courageous figure whom he had admired for more than two decades. "I consider Hon. Musa Ecweru a fearless man and hero. I have always admired him. Ever since 2003. We shall reward him," Muhoozi said. The CDF's comments suggest a distinction in his assessment of political figures involved in the Elwelu matter, with Ecweru receiving praise while the retired general was accused of betraying the military. Ecweru was in the news for calling on Elwelu to surrender or risk being killed, and threatening to rally behind Arrow to join hunt for the former deputy CDF. Muhoozi did not specify what reward Ecweru would receive. 'He will pay in full for betraying God's Army' Muhoozi described the UPDF as "God's Army" and said Elwelu would be held accountable for what he characterised as an act of betrayal. "As for Elweru, he will pay in full for betraying God's Army," he said. The statement marks a particularly strong denunciation of the retired general, who previously served in senior military positions, including as deputy CDF. Elwelu's arrest has attracted considerable attention because of his former position in the military establishment and the circumstances surrounding his reported falling-out with the current army leadership. The CDF's latest remarks do not specify the precise charges Elwelu may face or the legal process through which the alleged betrayal will be addressed. They nevertheless signal Muhoozi's determination to pursue accountability against the retired general, while rejecting suggestions that political intervention could influence military decisions. UPDF to withdraw from Somalia, focus on Gaza mission In a separate statement, Muhoozi announced that Uganda would focus more attention on the Gaza mission as the country withdraws its troops from Somalia. "As we withdraw all our troops from Somalia. We shall focus more on the Gaza mission," he said. The announcement points to a shift in the CDF's stated military priorities, although he did not provide operational details about the proposed Gaza mission, its timeline or the nature of Uganda's anticipated involvement. Uganda has maintained a military presence in Somalia for years as part of the African Union-led mission supporting the country's security and efforts against militant groups. Muhoozi accompanied the statement with a biblical quotation from Psalms 144:1, which reads: "Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight." The verse reflects the religious language the CDF has frequently used in describing the military and its role. Muhoozi explains why he does not publish UPDF photographs The army chief also addressed his practice of publishing photographs of opposition politicians and other political figures while avoiding images of serving or retired UPDF personnel, like Elwelu. "I don't publish photos of members of UPDF. That would be insulting our God. I only publish photos of the opposition e.g. NUP, FDC and so on," he said. The remarks appeared alongside his comments on Elwelu and the alleged rebellion, although Muhoozi did not explain how publishing photographs of military personnel would constitute an insult to God. His statement comes amid ongoing political debate over the relationship between the military, opposition parties and the country's political leadership. Elwelu's arrest and military career Elwelu is a retired senior UPDF officer who previously served as deputy CDF. He rose through the military ranks during a career that included command responsibilities in the country's security operations. His name became widely known following the 2016 Kasese operation in which security forces attacked the Rwenzururu royal palace, an incident that resulted in dozens of deaths and arrests. Elwelu was subsequently promoted to senior military positions before his retirement. His reported arrest in Soroti City has since triggered a series of statements, with questions emerging about the allegations against him, the circumstances of his surrender and whether any political understanding had been reached. Muhoozi's latest statements represent his strongest public warning yet that Elwelu will face consequences for what the CDF considers betrayal, while making clear that he does not intend to allow political intervention in the matter. The retired general's fate now remains a subject of intense public interest as the UPDF leadership continues to make statements about his alleged rebellion and the circumstances surrounding his arrest.
