There is uproar after Parliament of Uganda began disbursing Shs200m to each of the 529 MPs in the 11th Parliament.
The administration of Parliament insists that the Shs200m is one of the MPs’ entitlements.
Parliament’s director of communication and Public Affairs Chris Obore said there was nothing to hide since this is the same amount the 10th Parliament legislators got.
After all, Obore added, this Shs200m is an entitlement that is handed to MPs once in five years.
Besides this car cash, each MP earns a net salary of Shs6.1m.
S/he gets Shs17m as constituency support fund.
Each MP also receives a Shs6.5m housing allowance.
S/he receives a Shs1.945m town running allowance.
Also, depending on where one’s constituency is located from the centre, one is entitled to a fuel allowance of between Shs10m and Shs30m.
At the close of every month, an MP is assured of a net salary of Shs6.1 million besides a string of benefits that include housing allowance of Shs6.5 million, constituency support fee of Shs17.03 million plus a town running fee of Shs1.945 million. Ministers or Ex-officios that don’t represent any constituency are exempted from the constituency fund.
