Incarcerated veteran opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye has sent a handwritten Easter message to Ugandans.
Writing from Luzira Upper Prison on April 17, 2025, and addressing his letter to friends, colleagues, activists, relatives and family, Besigye expressed gratitude for the moral, material and spiritual support extended to him and his aide Hajji Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya.
Besigye and Hajji Lutale were kidnapped from Nairobi Kenya last year.
They were first detained at the Makindye Military Barracks.
Later, Besigye and Lutale were remanded to the Luzira Maximum Security Prison.
They face charges of treason over alleged plans to overthrow President Yoweri Museveni’s government.
They were first tried in the military court but later taken to the civilian court after a Supreme Court ruling that punched holes in the biased military courts. (See summary of that Supreme Court ruling or the entire ruling Here and There).
In Besigye’s handwritten Easter message to Ugandans, the four-time presidential candidate was also grateful to God for the completion of the lent period.
Wishing Ugandans “blessed Easter holidays,” Besigye said he and Lutale were “at peace inspire of the imprisonment, by the Grace of God.”
He also wrote that prison has given him a chance to reflect on the current state of affairs. Besigye ended with a verse from 2 Timothy 4:3-4.

It should be remembered that an acting high court judge denied Besigye bail even when he met all the requirements and conditions. (Read more about the judge who denied Besigye bail Here and There).
