The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has deployed in South Sudan’s capital Juba amidst growing tensions between the united government’s factions jostling for power, the Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has confirmed.
The deployment follows growing tension between the ruling coalition’s leaders. The allied government, led by President Salva Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar, was formed in 2018 following a peace agreement that ended the country’s five-year civil war.
There have been reports of clashes in the northeastern Upper Nile State between forces allied to the president and first vice president.
“As of 2 days ago, our Special Forces units entered Juba to secure it,” Gen Muhoozi posted on his X handle.
Gen Muhoozi said that the UPDF only recognized Salva Kiir as the President of South Sudan.
The army commander also shared a video of soldiers getting off a plane in the South Sudan capital Juba with a statement “UPDF Commandos arriving in Juba to support South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) in the current crisis. Operation ‘Mlinzi wa Kimya’ has begun. God bless UPDF!”
