Christopher Okello Onyum
Ggaba Daycare Centre Children Killer Was Reportedly Mentally Sick. Days ago, Christopher Okello Onyum shocked the world when he raided Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre, a daycare centre in Kampala, and stabbed four toddlers to death.
Police detectives investigating the crime are interested in understanding the motive behind the attack and the killings at the daycare centre.
They are also interested in knowing if Christopher Okello Onyum coordinated the attack with other people, and what made him get involved in the shocking act.
The magnitude of the crime made Ugandans question the mental health status of Christopher Okello Onyum. Some suspected that he was mentally sick and that he should have been in a mental hospital like Butabika.
Some accounts thought to be of witnesses or at least those who claim to know Christopher Okello Onyum suggest that he could have had a history of actions linked to mental health challenges.
Allegations of Christopher Okello Onyum’s strange behavior linked to mental health challenges are yet to be confirmed by detectives handling the investigations into the killing of children at the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre.
Police detectives could pick interest in the speculation around Christopher Okello Onyum’s mental health, including talking to his relatives on claims that he was involved in similar actions years ago.
Police’s mental health experts are also expected to do a mental examination of the suspect to understand if mental health challenges could have been the cause of the crime.
The Uganda Police Force says investigations to establish the motive of the killings are ongoing. Finding out whether the attack and killings were pre-meditated or rather as an influence of mental illness will be key in piecing together evidence to be used in court – and if the matter is prosecutable.
There are also unconfirmed reports that Okello had said, at the scene, that even if he were killed, similar attacks would still be carried out against Ugandans.
