The body of former security minister Gen Elly Tumwine has been returned to Uganda as his family and the state prepare for his burial.
Gen Tumwine’s body arrived at the Entebbe International Airport in the evening of Friday, Thursday 26.
The body has been in Nairobi, Kenya, where the general and National Resistance Army (NRA) bush war hero had been flown for treatment.
Tumwine was pronounced dead on Thursday, August 25, at the Aga Khan Hospital. Tributes have been pouring in from senior government and military officials led by President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni, his former teacher, mentor and commander.
The body for the former MP representing the army in the national Parliament from 1996 to 2021 arrived at Entebbe at about 7pm.
Those at Entebbe to receive the body of Gen Tumwine included his successor security minister Maj Gen (Rtd) Jim Muhwezi and senior military officers.
The body has now been taken to Bombo Military Hospital for further management.
A comprehensive funeral program, clearly indicating dates for requiem church services and burial date, is expected to be released by the national army, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
Gen Tumwine’s body will be laid to rest at his country home in Kazo District.
