As expected, the Ugandan government awards scholarships to thousands of students to pursue their undergraduate studies free of charge at the country’s public universities. The scholarships are awarded under various schemes. Now, Makerere University’s and Makerere University Business School (Mubs’) national merit scheme government sponsorship lists for the 2023-2024 Academic Year are out.
The lists have been released by the Office of the Academic Registrar of Makerere University, alongside the cut off Points for Government Admissions.
The National Merit Scheme of Government Sponsorship is awarded to best performing A-level students who also posted better performance at previous levels to be able to get the required number of cut off points which vary every year depending on the performance in the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) administered by the Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb).
More students will be admitted under other schemes such as the District Quota System where a specific number of qualifying students from each district are selected for government sponsorship.
The 69-page lists were released amidst a course or academic program accreditation saga where almost all Ugandan private and public universities are on the spot over their failure to review the courses for re-accreditation. Due to this loophole, universities have been teaching expired courses or academic programs and awarding expired degrees.
