FORT PORTAL — From reading news bulletins on television to preparing to occupy one of Uganda’s most historic royal thrones, Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma is set for a dramatic transition from the newsroom to Tooro Palace.

Kijanangoma, a member of the Tooro royal family and a news anchor and editor at UBC TV, has been named the next Omukama of Tooro, succeeding the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

His selection marks a striking turn in the succession story that has unfolded since the death of Omukama Oyo, whose passing plunged the kingdom into mourning and triggered intense interest over who would take over the throne.

For years, Kijanangoma has been known to many Ugandans primarily through his work in television journalism. As a UBC TV news anchor and editor, he has spent much of his professional life in front of cameras and behind newsroom desks, delivering and shaping news for a national audience.

He will now move into a vastly different role — one that places him at the centre of the cultural, traditional and political life of Tooro.

Kijanangoma’s elevation also brings the succession debate to a dramatic conclusion after days of uncertainty and competing claims over who would inherit the throne following Oyo’s death.

The Tooro throne carries enormous cultural significance for the people of the kingdom, with the Omukama serving as the central symbol of Tooro’s identity, heritage and traditions.

Kijanangoma’s royal background, however, means that his selection does not represent an outsider’s entry into the institution. He is a member of the Tooro royal family and has now been elevated to the highest traditional office in the kingdom.
